1. Open Air Museum Petronell (Hauptstrasse 1a, 2404 Petronell-Carnuntum)

The Open Air Museum Petronell is the centre of the Archaeological Park Carnuntum.  Coming from Vienna, leave the B9 main road at the turn-off for Petronell-Carnuntum (brown signpost on the left to Carnuntum) and follow the local road L2026 until you reach the large visitors’ car park.  You will pass the Amphitheatre Petronell (2) which is situated to the right of the road.  The entrance to the Open Air Museum is in the Visitor Centre on the opposite side of the road.

2. Amphitheatre Petronell

In ancient times the Amphitheatre Petronell was situated outside the former civilian city.  The remains can be viewed free of charge.  A short path leads from the car park to the Amphitheatre. 

3. Large public baths / Palace ruins

What was previously erroneously known as the “palace ruins” were the largest public baths in the city (thus “large public baths”) and in ancient times formed the northern extension of the forum in the civilian city.  The remains of the large public baths can be best explored on foot from the Open Air Museum Petronell.  Right next to the entrance to the Visitor Centre is a private road which leads through a gateway in the castle wall to the public baths.  The large public baths can be viewed free of charge.  On foot from the Open Air Museum Petronell: about 15 minutes.

4. Heidentor

The Heidentor (Heathens’ Gate) was originally a triumphal monument which was erected under Emperor Constantius II in the 2nd half of the 4th century AD outside the city.  Exit the car park on the left and follow the road as far as you can.  Turn right, go under the bridge and the Heidentor can be seen after about 500 metres (parking space for coaches too on site).  The Heidentor can be viewed free of charge.

5. Amphitheatre Bad Deutsch-Altenburg (Wiener Strasse, 2405 Bad Deutsch-Altenburg)

In ancient times the Amphitheatre Bad Deutsch-Altenburg was situated in the vicinity of the former legionary city and can now be found right beside the local road L2026 between Petronell-Carnuntum and Bad Deutsch-Altenburg.  Coming from the Open Air Museum Petronell, the Amphitheatre is situated about 2 kms outside the town of Petronell-Carnuntum on the left-hand side of the road.  Coming from Bad Deutsch-Altenburg, the Amphitheatre is on the right-hand side after some 500 metres, distinguished by three flags.  Car park on site.

6. Museum Carnuntinum (Badgasse 40-46, 2405 Bad Deutsch-Altenburg)

Coming from Petronell-Carnuntum, follow the local road to the middle of Bad Deutsch-Altenburg.  When you reach the traffic island with clock, turn left into the Badgasse and go past the Kurzentrum to the end of the road.  The Museum is situated on the right at the end of the road.  Coming from the  B9 main road, take the exit Bad Deutsch-Altenburg and drive downhill past the church, following the road to the roundabout.  There are plenty of parking spaces in front of the museum.

7. Kulturfabrik Hainburg

Coming from the B9 main road, follow the signposts to either the car park “Donaulände” or “Kulturplatz”.
