Roman Delicacies in Carnuntum

Location of this enjoyable event “Roman Delicacies” is the villa urbana, a Roman city mansion erected true to the original in the Open Air Museum Petronell.  Between the courses of the banquet (with accompanying commentary) the guests can watch the preparation of the dishes in the Roman kitchen.  The five-course meal is accompanied by Roman wine creations and top wines from the Carnuntum wine-growing region.

Thanks to Apicius, a gourmet who lived in the first half of the 1st century AD, we have detailed and extensive descriptions of Roman cuisine.  The whole ingenuity and variety of Roman cuisine can only be appreciated when one has transferred the ancient descriptions into recipes that can be cooked today, and thus open a door to a time when a distinct culture of pleasure was the expression of a sophisticated lifestyle.
