Lucius ´house and Villa Urbana

Open Air Museum Petronell

Wealthy Romans were attracted to settle here in Carnuntum, the Roman metropolis on the Danube, where they could flaunt their riches. The imposing house of Lucius, the cloth merchant, shows this merchant’s affluence.  First of all you will accompany a slave who is visiting the merchant in order to buy some cloth.  The host greets you with a beaker of mulsum and allows you to participate in the conversation as was the Roman way.
The villa urbana is a magnificent Roman city mansion with colourful murals and generously dimensioned rooms, which allow one a unique glimpse into the life of the Roman upper classes in Carnuntum.  The well-informed house-slave will accompany you during your tour of the ancient building and will entertain you with apt anecdotes.
Finally your powers of observation will be put to the test.  Armed with a plan of the house, wax tablet and stylus, you now search for objects in the villa which decorate the rich Roman’s house as souvenirs or presents, but which are clearly from distant Roman provinces.
