The ancient city of Carnuntum covered an area of about 10 sq. kilometres at the beginning of the 3rd century AD when it was at its largest. So far only about 0.5% of this area has been excavated.
Roman Carnuntum was founded in the year 6 AD when Tiberius, who later became emperor, erected a winter camp here. Unfortunately the exact location is unknown.
The centre of Carnuntum was the military camp which was erected in the middle of the 1st century AD. A civilian settlement, the so-called canabae legionis or legionary city, grew up around the military camp.
Towards the end of the 1st century AD civilians settled in what is today’s Petronell-Carnuntum, in the so-called civilian city.
