Friends of Carnuntum - Die Gesellschaft der Freunde Carnuntums

The society “Gesellschaft der Freunde Carnuntums” (Friends of Carnuntum) is one of the oldest archaeological associations with rich traditions in Austria.

It was founded in the year 1884 with the aim of supporting archaeological research in Carnuntum and making it available to an interested public as well as preserving important witnesses to Austria’s Roman history for the future.  In 1904 the Museum Carnuntinum – financed by the society – was opened by Emperor Francis Joseph.  By 1914 the society had financed the excavation of most of the ruins visible today in Carnuntum.  Following financial difficulties after 1918 and dissolution in 1939, the society was founded once more in 1948.  Even today the society still contributes a sizeable amount to the research and conservation of Carnuntum’s archaeological heritage through lectures, specialist conferences, excursions and the production of scientific publications.  For Carnuntum is one of the largest and most important archaeological landscapes in Austria.
