Although Carnuntum today is the largest archaeological landscape in Austria, most of the former metropolis on the Danube has lain undisturbed beneath the earth for 1500 years. Despite over 100 years of excavations, only 0.5% of Carnuntum has been uncovered to date, which shows how large and important it was in Roman times.
However, we can conjure up a clear picture of how ancient Carnuntum looked and what ground it covered, thanks to past excavations, aerial photography and modern scans of the soil.
From the abundance of hidden treasures, those areas must be mentioned which played an important part in the development of the city.
