Southern flair, Mediterranean joie-de-vivre and impressive witnesses to Roman culture: saunter along the ancient roads, past public baths, and marvel at the luxury in Roman town houses.
Special attractions include numerous reconstructed Roman buildings which allow a glimpse of Roman citizens’ everyday life. The highlights of your tour will be the house of Lucius, a cloth merchant from Carnuntum, as well as the villa urbana, where you can enjoy a brief rest in the shade of its columned hall. The Roman gardens – a relaxing oasis full of blooms and fragrances – are also particularly attractive.
Since 6 June 2008 a new attraction awaits you in the open air museum: a reconstructed town villa gives a worldwide unique glimpse into the luxurious life of the Roman upper classes!
In order that ‘genuine’ Carnuntum can be awakened to new life, our experts are working following the principles of experimental archaeology – a very expensive method which is seldom applied anywhere in the world. The only plants taken into consideration when the gardens were planned are those where traces have been found during excavations. So that the gardens look as authentic as possible, the only seeds used have been cultivated from modern plants that can be traced back to ancient times.
